Goddess Lakshmi Story – Chapter 1: Origin in the Ocean of Milk

Birth in the Ocean of Milk

The heavens were troubled by the wars waged between the gods and the demons. The attainment of Amrita, which could make them immortal and grant them victory over the demons, was the only solution. This Amrita was hidden in the depths of the Ocean of Milk, and to obtain it, the churning of the ocean was necessary.

The Beginning of the Ocean Churning

The Mandara mountain was made the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki the rope. On one side were the gods, on the other the demons, both engaged in this arduous task with the hope of obtaining Amrita. The Ocean of Milk was fathomless and calm, but as the churning began, it became agitated. Waves began to rise, as if the ocean was eager to reveal the secrets hidden in its depths. Even the combined strength of the gods and demons was not making this task easy, yet the desire for Amrita kept them united. To keep the mountain stable, Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and supported the Mandara mountain on his vast back.

Lord Indra said with a worried tone, "This churning seems extremely difficult! Will we ever be able to obtain Amrita?" Meanwhile, the demon king Bali, proud of his strength, said, "No matter how much the gods try, in the end, we will be the ones to obtain Amrita. This is the fruit of our penance!"

The Emergence of Goddess Lakshmi

The churning was proceeding at a rapid pace. Halahala poison emerged from the depths of the ocean, which Lord Shiva held in his throat and came to be known as Neelkanth. Then the Kamadhenu cow, the Uchchaihshrava horse, the Airavata elephant, and the Kalpavriksha tree appeared. Finally, from the Ocean of Milk, emerged Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of beauty and fortune. The ten directions were illuminated by her divine form. She held a lotus flower in her hands, and her radiance shone like gold. Both gods and demons were mesmerized by her beauty. With the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi, hope surged in the hearts of the gods, as if the attainment of Amrita had now become certain.

Goddess Lakshmi said in her sweet voice, "I am the power of Narayana and have come to pave the way for righteousness. Where truth, love, and justice are followed, there I shall reside." Her words filled everyone's hearts with peace.

Vishnu's Acceptance of Lakshmi

After the emergence of Goddess Lakshmi, the question arose as to whose consort she would become. She cast her gaze around and saw Lord Vishnu, who was calmly observing everything. A feeling of love and respect for Lord Vishnu welled up in her heart. Goddess Lakshmi herself chose Lord Vishnu as her groom. Lord Vishnu, with a smile, accepted Goddess Lakshmi and gave her a place in his heart. This moment was a moment of joy and celebration for the entire universe. Now the gods were convinced that righteousness would surely be established. The subsequent story will be based on the union of Vishnu and Lakshmi, and their divine love.
