Karni Mata Katha – Chapter 5: Relation with Rathores

Connection with Rathores
After the establishment of Deshnok, Karni Mata's fame began to spread everywhere. Stories of her accomplishments and sacrifices reached every person. During this time, Rao Jodha, the Rathore ruler of Marwar, was struggling to regain his lost kingdom. He learned of Karni Mata's glory and set out for Deshnok seeking help.
Arrival of Rao Jodha
Crossing the sand dunes, Rao Jodha arrived at Deshnok with some of his trusted soldiers. The sun was intense and sand was blowing in the wind, but Rao Jodha's heart was filled with a ray of hope. He was eager to have a glimpse of Karni Mata. The expressions of defeat and despair were evident on his face, as he had been struggling for many years to reclaim his ancestral land. A feeling of reverence and faith was surging in his heart towards Karni Mata, and he was curious to know if she could guide him.
Rao Jodha prayed in his heart, "O Mother, protect me. Help me regain my lost land. I have come to your refuge, uphold my honor."
Blessing and Foundation of Mehrangarh
When Rao Jodha reached Karni Mata, the Mother recognized him as soon as she saw him. She affectionately called Rao Jodha to her and said, "Jodha, do not be disheartened. Your time is coming. You will get your land back." Karni Mata blessed Rao Jodha and prophesied that his lineage would always rule Marwar. She ordered Rao Jodha to build a new fort, which would be impregnable to enemies. To lay the foundation of that very fort, Karni Mata herself went with Rao Jodha. In 1459, the foundation of Mehrangarh Fort was laid by the hands of Karni Mata. This fort is still a symbol of the power of the Rathores and the blessings of Karni Mata.
With Karni Mata's blessings, Rao Jodha's confidence was rekindled. He had complete faith in the Mother's words and began to organize his army. By the Mother's grace, he achieved victory in every battle and gradually regained his lost kingdom. Mehrangarh Fort became the center of Rathore power and still bears witness to their glorious history.
Guidance for the Rathores
Karni Mata guided not only Rao Jodha but the entire Rathore dynasty from time to time. She inspired them to walk the path of righteousness and justice. She came to be worshipped as their Kuldevi (clan goddess). Karni Mata told the Rathores to always help the poor and helpless. She explained the importance of cow protection to them and ordered them to always take care of their subjects. These teachings of Karni Mata played a significant role in making the Rathore dynasty a powerful and just ruler. Next, we will see how, with the blessings of Karni Mata, Deshnok became inhabited by rats and they became revered.
