Chapter 2 of Kamakhya Devi Katha — Shiva's Grief and Creation. Lord Shiva laments in separation from Sati, and his weeping and anger cause upheaval in creation, giving birth to various demons and calamities.

Shiva's Grief and Creation

After Sati was consumed by the fire, Mount Kailash seemed to be in mourning. Even the gentle breezes sobbed in separation from Sati, and the sun's rays hesitated to descend upon the earth. Sati's sacrifice was a beginning, a tragedy that would lead to immense upheaval in the universe.

Shiva's Profound Grief

When Shiva learned that Sati had immolated herself at her father Daksha's yajna, his anger knew no bounds. His third eye seemed eager to unleash the fire of destruction. His heart was so filled with sorrow that it felt as if the weight of the entire cosmos had fallen upon his shoulders. His matted locks unraveled, ash flew from his body, and tears streamed from his eyes. The calm, steady Shiva was now distraught in the separation from his beloved.

"Sati... Sati!" Shiva roared, his voice echoing off the peaks of Mount Kailash. "What have you done? You have left me alone in this world! With whom shall I now share the burden of my creation? Who will inspire me on the path of love and knowledge?"

Birth of Virabhadra and the Slaying of Daksha

Shiva's anger took a terrifying form. From his matted locks emerged a fearsome warrior – Virabhadra. Virabhadra was the embodiment of Shiva's wrath, wielding terrible weapons and shrouded in darkness. He bowed to Shiva and asked, "O Mahadeva, what is your command?" Shiva replied, "Go, destroy Daksha's yajna and make him face the consequences of his actions. Spare no one who has insulted my Sati!"

Virabhadra, with his army, reached the site of Daksha's yajna. The gods and sages present at the ritual were terrified. Virabhadra seized Daksha and severed his head from his body. The yajna was destroyed, and chaos ensued everywhere. This was Mahadeva's justice, the retribution for Sati's insult. Virabhadra cast Daksha's head into the fire, and then returned to Kailash. This event was an indirect display of the power of Kamakhya Devi, as Sati is the primal form of Kamakhya.

Turmoil in the Universe and the Gods' Concern

Daksha's slaying and the destruction of the yajna caused an uproar throughout the cosmos. The gods were terrified, as Shiva's grief and anger had disrupted the balance of creation. They knew that if Shiva's sorrow was not pacified, it could prove catastrophic for the entire universe. Indra, Vishnu, and Brahma were all worried. They devised a plan together on how to pacify Shiva and save the universe from destruction. They pondered who would be able to approach Shiva and help him overcome his grief over Sati's separation. The gods' anxieties grew, as they also knew that attempting to pacify Shiva would not be easy for any deity.

Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we witnessed the depth of Shiva's grief and anger after Sati's sacrifice. The birth of Virabhadra and the slaying of Daksha symbolize Shiva's justice and power. This event worried the gods, as Shiva's sorrow posed a threat to creation. The next chapter will be about the rebirth of Kamadeva and the curse, which is a significant part of the efforts to pacify Shiva's grief.
