Sati's Sacrifice: A Beginning

There was an atmosphere of joy and peace on Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva was engrossed in meditation with his better half, Mother Sati. However, this peace was not to last, as destiny had written something else. Sati's father, Prajapati Daksha, harbored a deep animosity towards Shiva, which was about to take the form of a terrible tragedy.

The Organization of Daksha's Yajna

Prajapati Daksha, son of Brahma, organized a grand yajna. This yajna was not just a religious ritual, but a demonstration of Daksha's power and dominance. Deities, sages, and kings from across the universe were invited. Grandeur reigned at the yajna site; fragrant incense and the flames of the havan touched the sky. Chants of mantras echoed everywhere, but one name was absent from this celebration – that of Lord Shiva, and also Sati. Daksha had deliberately not invited his daughter and son-in-law, which was a clear proof of his contempt.

Sati, sitting on Kailash, heard about the yajna. Her heart yearned to meet her father and witness the yajna, but she also knew that her husband, Shiva, would not approve of this invitation. "Should I go?" Sati thought to herself. "My heart longs to see my father, but it would not be right to disobey Mahadev." She finally decided to express her desire to Shiva.

Sati's Self-Immolation

Sati sought permission from Lord Shiva to attend the yajna. Shiva, explaining Daksha's malevolent nature and the purpose of the yajna, tried to dissuade her from going. He said, "Sati, Daksha has deliberately not invited us. Going there would be insulting." However, Sati remained steadfast due to her affection for her father and her eagerness to witness the yajna. Finally, Shiva granted her permission to go, but warned that she might be insulted. When Sati reached the yajna site, Daksha welcomed her with contempt. He used harsh words about Lord Shiva, filling Sati's heart with anger and sorrow. She could not bear the insult to her husband.

Angry and insulted, Sati leaped into the yajna kund. Seeing her body consumed by the flames, all the gods and sages were stunned. Sati's sacrifice was for the protection of dharma and honor. It also became the cause of the origin of Kamakhya Shakti Peeth, as it was from this sacrifice that Lord Vishnu had to sever Mother Sati's body, leading to the establishment of the Shakti Peethas. Kamakhya, where Mother Sati's yoni part fell, is one of the most important Shakti Peethas.

Dissection of the Body by Vishnu

Upon hearing the news of Sati's self-immolation, Lord Shiva was filled with rage. He created Virabhadra from his matted locks, who destroyed Daksha's yajna and beheaded Daksha. Lord Shiva began to wander the universe with Sati's burnt body, his grief destabilizing creation. The gods prayed to Lord Vishnu to pacify Shiva. Then Lord Vishnu, with his Sudarshan Chakra, dismembered Sati's body, causing her body parts to fall in various places, which became Shakti Peethas. Where Sati's yoni part fell, the temple of Kamakhya Devi was established, which is still a center of devotion today.
