Kaliya Nag Daman Katha – Chapter 5: Forgiveness and Restoration

Forgiveness and Restoration
In the previous chapter, we saw how the child Krishna defeated Kaliya Nag with his divine dance. The constant pounding of Krishna's feet on Kaliya's heads was weakening his power. Now Kaliya, completely helpless, was on the verge of death. The poisonous odor spreading in the waters of the Yamuna was slowly decreasing, and the people of Braj were eagerly waiting for Krishna's return.
Kaliya Nag's Final Plea
Kaliya was groaning in pain. His hoods were bloodied, his eyes were distraught, and his massive body was trembling. He realized his mistake. He understood that Krishna was no ordinary child, but an incarnation of Narayan himself. His wives, the Nagakanyas, were distraught seeing their husband's plight. They knew that only forgiveness could save Kaliya now. They folded their hands and looked at Krishna with humility, tears in their eyes and prayer in their throats.
The Nagakanyas spoke in unison, "O Lord! We know that our husband has committed a crime. He has polluted the waters of the Yamuna, causing suffering to the people of Braj. But he was ignorant. O merciful one, you are the protector of the world. Forgive your servant. Save us from dying with our husband. Do not orphan us. We are under your refuge."
Krishna's Forgiveness
Krishna was moved upon hearing the Nagakanyas' prayer. He stopped his dance. Kaliya was now completely still, as if waiting for death. Krishna said in a grave voice, "Kaliya, you have committed unrighteousness through your actions. You have poisoned the Yamuna, causing suffering to the people of Braj. This offense of yours is not worthy of forgiveness, but I accept the prayer of your wives. I grant you life, but you will have to leave the Yamuna and go to Raman Island. You will never return here again."
As soon as he heard Krishna's words, a new energy coursed through Kaliya's body. He had been given an opportunity to atone for his sins. By Krishna's grace, he was grateful to receive life. He folded his hands and said, "O Lord, I am grateful to you. I will obey your command. I will leave for Raman Island immediately. I promise that I will never cause any trouble to Brajbhoomi again." As soon as Krishna's gaze fell upon him, Kaliya was filled with wisdom and the poison in his heart turned into love. He understood that the fruit of ego is destructive and that forgiveness protects life.
Purification of Yamuna and Peace in Vrindavan
After Kaliya left, the water of the Yamuna became clear again. The effect of the poison was completely eliminated. The people of Braj, who were waiting for Krishna on the banks of the Yamuna, were overjoyed to see him. They picked up Krishna in their laps and started chanting his praises. A wave of joy spread throughout Vrindavan. Yamuna Maiya was once again ready to provide holy water to her devotees. The Gopis together performed Krishna's Aarti and lovingly fed him.
From that day onwards, peace was re-established in Vrindavan. Children started playing fearlessly in the Yamuna, the Gopis sang songs while fetching water, and the cowherds grazed their cows without any fear. By subduing Kaliya, Krishna had given freedom from fear to the people of Braj. Describing Krishna's pastimes, the entire Vrindavan became devotional. The story of Kaliya Nag will continue to inspire devotees for centuries to walk on the path of righteousness and stay away from ego.
Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, we saw that Krishna forgave Kaliya and ordered him to leave the Yamuna and go to Raman Island. The water of the Yamuna became pure again and peace was established in Vrindavan. The spiritual lesson is that forgiveness is the greatest virtue and renunciation of ego is the path to liberation.
