Katha of Mother Kali – Chapter 4: Shiva Pacifies Kali

Shiva Calms Kali
The wrath of Mother Kali was terrifying. Rivers of blood were flowing, severed heads of demons were scattered all around, and her Tandava was poised to destroy creation. There was chaos among the gods, and they could not understand how to stop this destruction.
The Arrival of Shiva
A horrific scene of blood and destruction spread all around. Dark clouds covered the sky, and it seemed as if the end of the world had arrived. Fear gripped the gods, and they could not find any way to calm Mother Kali's wrath. Just then, a bright light emerged in the sky, and from it appeared Lord Shiva, the wielder of the trident, with the Ganges in his matted locks. Seeing his calm and radiant form, a ray of hope ignited among the gods.
Lord Shiva looked around with his serene gaze. Even amidst the fierce flames of destruction and anger, his mind was not disturbed. He felt the immense power of Mother Kali, and a feeling of compassion arose in his heart for her. He thought, "This anger is only to protect creation, but this destructive form must now be calmed."
Shiva's Sacrifice
Mother Kali was so immersed in her wrath that she did not even sense the arrival of Lord Shiva. She continued to slay the demons, her tongue stained with blood, and the garland of skulls around her neck swayed. Lord Shiva knew he had to do something to stop Mother Kali, but he could not attack her. He thought of a plan. He took ash from his matted hair and smeared it on his body. Then, he lay down on the earth, spreading his body in Mother Kali's path.
As Mother Kali moved forward, her foot suddenly fell on Lord Shiva's body. She was instantly brought back to her senses, realizing what she had done. Her eyes filled with surprise and remorse. She froze for a moment, her anger subsided, and her tongue lolled out in shame. The sword slipped from her hands and fell to the ground.
Kali's Pacification
Mother Kali realized her mistake, and her heart was filled with remorse. She immediately fell at the feet of Lord Shiva and begged for forgiveness. Tears began to flow from her eyes. She said, "O Lord, I have made a grave mistake. In my blindness of anger, I did not even recognize you. Forgive me." Lord Shiva lifted her and embraced her. He said, "Kali, you are Shakti, the protector of the universe. Your anger was also justified, but now this destruction must stop." With the touch of Lord Shiva, Mother Kali's wrath was completely calmed. The same serene and divine smile returned to her face.
