The War of Kali and the Demons

In the previous chapter, we saw how Mother Durga, with her power, created Mother Kali to destroy the demons. Kali, born from Mother Durga's frown, stood ready for battle in a fearsome form. Her eyes blazed like fire, and her tongue flickered, as if eager to devour the entire universe. Now was the time to fulfill the vow that Mother Durga had made to the gods – the destruction of the demons.

The Attack of Chanda and Munda

When Shumbha and Nishumbha, two extremely powerful demons, received the news of Mother Kali's manifestation, they were filled with rage. They ordered two valiant warriors of their army, Chanda and Munda, to fight Mother Kali and bring her captive. Drowned in arrogance, Chanda and Munda advanced towards Mother Kali with their vast army. Their army consisted of demons equipped with terrible weapons, whose roars made the earth tremble. Mother Kali, mounted on a lion, stood calm and steady, like an unyielding rock in the face of a fierce storm. There was no sign of fear on her face, but rather a divine radiance that could captivate even enemies.

Munda challenged his army, "O wicked ones! What are you looking at? Capture that fearsome Kali and bring her! Obey the command of Shumbha and Nishumbha!" Chanda also roared, "Today, we will make the earth drink the blood of this Kali! Come, attack!" Mother Kali smiled gently, as if pitying the ignorance of those foolish demons. She thought to herself, "What will these ignorant ones know of who I am? Today, they will gain knowledge of the truth."

The Annihilation of the Demons

Chanda and Munda, with their army, attacked Mother Kali. The demons threw spears, swords, and maces, but Mother Kali cut down all those weapons with her sword. Her sword moved with the speed of lightning, and the heads of the demons, severed from their bodies, fell to the ground. Mother Kali's wrath had taken on a fierce form. With her roar, she filled the hearts of the demons with fear. Her trident sent many demons to their death simultaneously.

Mother Kali's impact was miraculous. Wherever she stepped, demons fell in heaps. By her grace, every weapon was proving fatal to the enemies. The power of Mother Durga, embodied in Kali, was destroying the demons. Chanda and Munda, seeing their army being annihilated, became terrified. Munda tried to flee, but Mother Kali severed his head with her sword. Chanda also could not escape Mother Kali's wrath, and the same fate befell him. Mother Kali severed the heads of Chanda and Munda and offered them at the feet of Mother Durga.

The Praise of the Gods

After the slaying of Chanda and Munda, the gods praised Mother Kali. They showered flowers from heaven and chanted "Jai Kali, Jai Kali." They knew that Mother Kali had liberated them from the terror of the demons. The fear of the Asuras had ended, and righteousness was being re-established. Mother Kali's anger began to subside, and a look of maternal affection appeared in her eyes.

Now, Mother Kali had become calm, but the power to face Shumbha and Nishumbha still lay awakened within her. This peace was the calm before the coming storm. The next chapter will tell how Mother Kali faces Shumbha and Nishumbha and what the consequence of her wrath is.
