Chapter 1 of the Jwalamukhi Mata Katha — Sati's Sacrifice: Origin of the Flame. The background of Jwalamukhi's origin is established due to Lord Shiva's sorrow and Sati's sacrifice.

Sati's Sacrifice: The Origin of Jwala

Peace reigned on Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva was engrossed in his meditation. However, this peace was soon to be shattered. Daksha Prajapati, Sati's father, was organizing a grand Yajna, to which he had not invited Shiva. This insult pierced Sati's heart, as she was deeply saddened by her father's behavior.

Insult at Daksha's Yajna

Daksha Prajapati's Yajna pavilion was vast and magnificent. Chants of mantras echoed all around, and a gathering of deities was present. Sati was eager to witness her father's grand Yajna, but it did not feel right to go without Shiva. Her mind was filled with apprehension; she was well aware of her father's anger and his disdain for Shiva. Yet, the thread of her father's affection continued to pull her.

Sati said to herself, "This is my family, my home. How can I stay away from my father? Perhaps, my presence will evoke some love for Shiva in his heart." She sought permission from Shiva to go, but Shiva explained to her that it is not appropriate to visit someone's home uninvited, especially when there is a possibility of being insulted there. Still, Sati's heart did not agree.

Sati's Self-Immolation

When Sati reached Daksha's Yajna, her father greeted her with disdain. He spoke many insulting words about Shiva, filling Sati's heart with anger and sorrow. Daksha addressed Shiva as 'inauspicious' and 'dweller of the cremation ground,' making the insult unbearable for Sati. She could not tolerate the insult to her husband.

Filled with anger and anguish, Sati declared, "I cannot bear this body that I received from a father who insults my husband!" Saying this, she jumped into the sacrificial fire and gave up her life. Chaos erupted in the Yajna pavilion. Fear spread among the deities and sages, as Sati's sacrifice was a warning of terrible consequences. The influence of Jwala Ji began from here, Sati's power began to manifest in the form of fire.

Shiva's Tandava

When Shiva received the news of Sati's self-immolation, his anger reached its peak. He created Virabhadra and Bhadrakali from his matted locks, who destroyed Daksha's Yajna and severed Daksha's head from his body. After this, Shiva lifted Sati's lifeless body onto his shoulders and began to perform the Tandava dance in anger. The earth trembled with his Tandava, and a state of cosmic dissolution ensued in the universe. The deities were terrified, as Shiva's wrath could lead to the destruction of creation. In the next chapter, we will see how Lord Vishnu stops this destruction and creates the Shakti Peethas.

Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we saw how Sati immolated herself at her father's Yajna due to the insult to Shiva. Sati's sacrifice led to the origin of Jwala Ji, and Shiva's anger transformed into Tandava, threatening the destruction of the earth. This story teaches us the importance of protecting love and respect and the courage to stand against insult.
