Jagannath Temple Puri – Introduction
Jagannath Temple Puri is one of the four sacred Dhams (Char Dham) of India and a world-famous temple dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna in his form as Jagannath. This temple is located in the city of Puri in the state of Odisha, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. This temple holds special religious significance in Hinduism, and millions of devotees visit here every year to have darshan of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra.
Built in the 12th century, this temple is world-renowned for its grand Kalinga architecture, the grand Rath Yatra, Mahaprasad, and amazing traditions. The main spire of the temple is approximately 65 meters (214 feet) high, and the Nilachakra and flag installed on it are special identifiers of the temple.
History and Mythology
According to the Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana, and other religious texts, Lord Vishnu resided in Puri in the form of Lord Jagannath for the welfare of devotees. It is believed that King Indradyumna established this temple on the orders of Lord Vishnu.
According to the legend, Lord Vishwakarma sculpted the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra. The most unique aspect of these idols is that they are made of wood (Neem), and after a certain period, new idols are installed according to the Navakalevara tradition.
The Jagannath Temple is considered the eastern Dham among the Char Dhams. It is believed that having darshan of this temple once in a lifetime leads to salvation.

The construction of the Jagannath Temple was initiated in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, and it was later completed by King Ananga Bhima Deva.

Historical Significance
According to the traditional story related to the origin of this temple, the original idol of Lord Jagannath, made of Indranil or Neelmani, was found under an Agarwood tree. It was so dazzling that Dharma wanted to hide it underground. King Indradyumna of Malwa saw this same idol in a dream. He then performed severe penance, and Lord Vishnu told him to go to the beach in Puri and he would find a log of wood (daru). He was to carve the idol from that wood. The king did as instructed and found the log of wood. After this, Vishnu and Vishwakarma appeared before him as a carpenter and sculptor. However, they set a condition that they would complete the idol in one month, but during this time, he would remain locked in a room, and the king or anyone else should not enter the room. On the last day of the month, when no sound was heard for many days, the king, out of curiosity, peeked into the room, and the old craftsman came out of the door and told the king that the idols were still incomplete, their hands had not yet been made. The king regretted this, and the sculptor explained that it was all due to divine will, and these idols would be installed and worshipped as they are. Then, those three idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra were installed in the temple.
In the Charan tradition, it is believed that the partially burnt bodies of Lord Dwarkadhish arrived here. After their demise in Prachi, they were cremated on the seashore (all three, Kishanji, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, together). But as the tide came in, the sea became turbulent, and the three partially burnt bodies were washed away. They emerged in Puri. The king of Puri placed the three bodies on separate chariots (if they were alive, they would have been on one chariot, but since they were bodies, they were placed on separate chariots). The people of the entire city pulled the chariots themselves and paraded them. Finally, the log of wood that floated with the bodies was made into a chest and dedicated to Mother Earth. This tradition is still followed today, but very few people know this fact. Most people believe that the Lord himself arrived here alive. This mention is also found in the manuscripts of Pujya Dolatdan Bapu, the guru of Charan Jagdamba Sonal Aai.
Jagannath Temple has been a major center of Indian culture, the Bhakti movement, and the Vaishnava tradition. Adi Shankaracharya, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramanujacharya, and many saints have visited this temple and described its glory.
Over the centuries, the temple has faced many invasions, but devotees and local kings have preserved its traditions and religious heritage.
