Chapter 4 of the Indra and Vritra story — Indra's Firm Resolve. Indra assures the gods he will fight Vritrasura, but he needs a powerful weapon.

Indra's Firm Resolve

In the previous chapter, the heavens echoed with the despairing prayers of the gods. Troubled by Vritrasura's tyranny, they looked towards Indra with hopeful eyes for their protection. Anxiety and fear were evident on the faces of the gods, but in Indra's eyes, the brilliance of duty now shone. A firm resolve had been born in his heart, piercing through the dense clouds of despair like a ray of hope.

Assurance to the Gods

Indra rose from his throne. His arms seemed to twitch, ready to wield the Vajra. His radiance spread throughout the assembly, bringing a fleeting glow back to the dejected faces of the gods. His voice was as deep as the clouds, a mixture of power and assurance. He cast his gaze upon all the gods, his eyes holding both compassion and valor. A faint hope stirred in the hearts of the gods, like the dawn about to break after a dark night. Indra's very presence gave strength to the gods, assuring them that all was not yet lost.

“O Devas,” Indra said, “I understand your suffering. Vritrasura's terror is unbearable, but there is no need to be afraid. I, Indra, the King of Gods, promise you that I will end Vritrasura. I will protect all of you, even by sacrificing my own life. My Vajra will destroy that demon!”

Declaration of War

Indra's roar echoed in all directions. He challenged Vritrasura to a battle. This was not just a declaration of war, but also a resolve for the victory of Dharma over Adharma. Indra sent his charioteer Matali to Vritrasura with the message of war. The war drums began to beat in the heavens. Indra inspected his weapons, re-checked his armor. The gods also began to prepare their respective armies. A mood of preparation for war seemed to descend upon the entire creation.

Indra said to Matali, “Go, Matali, and tell Vritrasura that Indra challenges him to battle. Tell him not to be so proud of his strength, for his strength is nothing before Dharma. Tell him to either release the gods or be ready to face Indra's Vajra. This war is between justice and injustice, and justice will surely triumph.” Indra's message was a deep blow to Vritrasura's arrogance.

Plan to Forge the Vajra

To destroy Vritrasura, Indra needed a powerful weapon, and that weapon was – the Vajra. This Vajra was not just an armament, but also a symbol of Indra's power. He summoned the divine architect Vishwakarma and urged him to forge a Vajra that could pierce Vritrasura's body. Vishwakarma told Indra that only a Vajra made from the bones of Sage Dadhichi could kill Vritrasura. Indra knew how difficult this request was, but for the protection of the gods, he had to do it. Indra's next challenge was to inspire Sage Dadhichi to donate his bones.

Indra said to Vishwakarma, “Vishwakarma, this task is indeed difficult, but not impossible. Sage Dadhichi is a protector of Dharma and he will surely help the gods. You begin preparations for forging the Vajra immediately; I will soon meet Sage Dadhichi and explain my plan to him.” Indra now had only one goal in his mind: the slaying of Vritrasura and the protection of the gods. He was ready to go to any extent to achieve this goal.

Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, Indra assured the gods and declared war on Vritrasura. He planned with the divine architect Vishwakarma to forge the Vajra, which was to be made from the bones of Sage Dadhichi. This chapter shows that when duty calls, a true leader is ready to face every difficulty, and does not even care for his own life.
