Indra and Vritra Story – Chapter 3: The Desperate Prayer of the Gods

Desperate Prayers of the Deities
In the previous chapter, we witnessed the terrifying rise of Vritrasura, whose terror shook the three worlds. Now, his oppression on the deities was escalating. The heavens were shrouded in clouds of fear and despair, and a single question echoed in the minds of the gods – how to find liberation from this crisis?
The Terror of Vritrasura
The splendor of the heavens was destroyed. The atmosphere, once filled with nectar and fragrance, was now polluted by Vritrasura's wrath and his fearsome roars. The deities, once fearless and powerful, were now forced to hide for their lives. Deep lines of worry had appeared on their faces, and a deep shadow of despair lay in their eyes. Yagnas and rituals had ceased, and silence had fallen upon the heavens, as if a terrible calamity was about to strike. Indra, the king of the gods, was himself distressed by his powerlessness. He began to feel ashamed of his strength and glory, as he was unable to protect his subjects from the atrocities of this demon.
Devraj Indra thought to himself, "Am I truly the king of the gods? Is my power so diminished that I stand helpless before this demon? I must save my subjects from this destruction, no matter what it takes."
Prayer for Help from Vishnu
Overwhelmed by despair, the deities finally decided to seek refuge in Lord Vishnu. They all gathered on the shores of the Ksheer Sagar (Ocean of Milk) and began to praise Lord Vishnu. Their voices were filled with helplessness and sorrow. They prayed to Lord Vishnu, "O Lord, only You can protect us from this crisis. This demon Vritrasura is tormenting us all with his illusory powers. Please grant us liberation from this demonic force. You are our only hope." Hearing the prayers of the deities, Lord Vishnu appeared. His divine form was radiant, and an atmosphere of peace and fearlessness surrounded him.
Lord Vishnu spoke, "O Deities, do not be afraid. I have heard your prayers. Vritrasura is a powerful demon, but he is not invincible. There is a way to defeat him.
Assurance to Indra
Lord Vishnu assured Indra, saying, "Indra, Vritrasura can only be defeated by a special weapon, which will be made from the bones of Sage Dadhichi. Go to Sage Dadhichi and ask him for the donation of his bones. That weapon alone will bring about Vritrasura's end." Hearing this, Indra's heart was filled with hope. He became confident that he was no longer alone, and with the grace of Lord Vishnu, he would surely achieve victory over Vritrasura. Lord Vishnu's assurance was like nectar to the deities. In the darkness of despair, they saw a ray of hope. They bowed at the feet of Lord Vishnu and expressed their gratitude. Now, a new resolve had been born in their hearts – to end Vritrasura and re-establish the heavens.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, we saw that the deities, tormented by Vritrasura's atrocities, seek refuge in Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu shows Indra the way to slay Vritrasura by forging the Vajra from the bones of Sage Dadhichi. This chapter teaches us that even in despair, we must have faith in God, for He alone shows us the path to liberation from crisis.
