Govardhan Parvat Katha – Chapter 5: Indra's Humility: A Lesson Learned

Indra's Humility: A Lesson Learned
In the previous chapter, we saw how Lord Krishna protected the people of Gokul by lifting the entire Govardhan mountain on his little finger. Indra's ego was shattered, and the fury of nature subsided. The rain stopped, and the people of Gokul were safe. Now, Indra had yet to realize his mistake and ask Krishna for forgiveness.
Indra's Repentance
As the clouds cleared, the sky became clean and clear. Indra, riding on his elephant Airavat, was looking down at Gokul. His face was filled with shame and remorse. He had misused his power, and a simple boy had defeated him. He understood that Krishna was no ordinary cowherd, but a great power that he had underestimated. There were tears in his eyes, and his heart was filled with sorrow.
Indra thought to himself, "What have I done? Blinded by ego, I challenged the power of God. I caused suffering to the innocent people of Gokul. I must ask for forgiveness. I must ask that boy, Krishna, for forgiveness."
Seeking Forgiveness from Krishna
Indra descended from Airavat and reached the bottom of Govardhan mountain on foot. There, he saw Krishna, who was holding the mountain on his finger, and the people of Gokul were singing and dancing happily around him. Indra fell to the ground before Krishna and grabbed his feet. He began to cry, and his voice was trembling with repentance.
"O Krishna," Indra said, "forgive me, the ignorant one. I was blinded by ego, and I insulted you. I caused suffering to the people of Gokul. I have realized my mistake. I acknowledge your power and your greatness. My pride is shattered, and I beg you to forgive me." Krishna lifted Indra up and patted him on the back with affection. He said, "Indra, get up. Ego is the cause of destruction. You have admitted your mistake, that is the most important thing. I have forgiven you. Go, and fulfill your duties, but always remember that power should always be used for the good of others, not to intimidate them."
Establishing the Importance of Govardhan Puja
Krishna ordered the people of Gokul to worship Govardhan mountain every year. He said that Govardhan mountain provides them with shelter and food, and it is worthy of their reverence. From that day on, the tradition of Govardhan Puja began, where people worship a form made of soil from Govardhan mountain and offer Annakut to it. This day became a symbol of expressing gratitude to Lord Krishna and respecting nature by abandoning ego. The people of Gokul hailed Krishna and considered him their protector and guide. Govardhan Puja became a symbol of Krishna's victory over Indra's ego and teaches that devotion and love are greater than power.
Summary of Chapter 5: Indra repented for his mistake and asked Krishna for forgiveness. Krishna forgave him and established the importance of Govardhan Puja, which symbolizes the victory of devotion and love over ego. This story teaches us that we should never be arrogant and should always be kind and humble towards others.
