Garuda's Questions, Vishnu's Answers

Even after drinking the nectar of immortality, the fear of death did not subside in Garuda's heart. Lord Vishnu, the devoted servant and his vehicle, knew well the questions hidden within Garuda. There was peace in the divine realm, but within that peace, turmoil raged in Garuda's heart.

Garuda's Anxiety in Vaikuntha

Vaikuntha Dham, where buildings adorned with gems and jewels shone brightly, and where even the air was filled with devotion and love, felt incomplete to Garuda today. His powerful wings, capable of reaching anywhere in the universe in an instant, sat still. His eyes held a deep curiosity, a question that had been swirling within him for years. He bowed before his Lord, Lord Vishnu, but a doubt was deepening within him. Is death inevitable? Is liberation from it possible?

Garuda softly said, "O Lord, I, your servant, Garuda, dare to ask you a question. Is death the ultimate truth of life? Is there no way out of this cycle? This fear constantly remains in my heart that one day this life will end."

Vishnu's Assurance

Lord Vishnu smiled, an ocean of compassion and wisdom surging in his eyes. He called Garuda near and lovingly caressed his head. Then, in a solemn tone, he said, "O Garuda, your question is valid, and it is not just yours, but that of all beings. Death is an essential part of life, but it is not the end; it is a transformation, a journey."

Lord Vishnu continued, "I will tell you in detail about the mystery of this death and the journey that follows. I will impart to you the knowledge that will show the path to liberation to you and to the entire world. This knowledge will be known as 'Garuda Purana'. Beings who listen to and read this Purana will be freed from the cycle of birth and death. This Purana destroys sins and grants salvation." His voice was infused with nectar, which somewhat lessened Garuda's anxiety. By Vishnu's grace, a new hope dawned in Garuda's heart.

The Glory of the Purana

Lord Vishnu, describing the glory of the Garuda Purana, said, "This Purana is a lamp for those who wander in the darkness of ignorance. It shows them the path of truth and leads them towards the true purpose of life. Merely by listening to it, sins are destroyed, and the path to liberation is paved. This Purana will describe the journey after death, the realm of Yama, the movement of the soul, and the mystery of rebirth. It is for the welfare of the world." With this assurance, faith arose in Garuda's heart that he would soon understand the mystery of death, paving the way for liberation from the bondage of birth and death. Now, he was eager to hear from Lord Vishnu about the journey that begins after death. This eagerness will lay the foundation for the next chapter.
