Chapter 1 of the Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Katha — Ganesh's Birth and Divine Powers. Goddess Parvati created Ganesh from the dirt of her body and appointed him as a gatekeeper, leading to his encounter with Lord Shiva and the severing of his head.

Ganesh's Birth and Divine Powers

Peace reigned on Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva was absorbed in deep meditation, and Mother Parvati was spending time joyfully with her companions. But a question kept arising in Mother Parvati's mind - could there not be someone who would always be ready to serve her, who would obey her every command?

Parvati's Creation of Ganesh

Mother Parvati, surrounded by the unparalleled beauty of Kailash, was inspired by a wonderful idea. She felt the desire to create a child from the paste of her own body. She thought, "How delightful it would be if I had a son! He would not only serve me but also protect me." A golden aura spread across her face, like the rays of the sun falling on a morning lotus. Her companions were watching her in amazement, as if they were seeing a goddess. A wonderful peace filled the atmosphere, as if nature itself wanted to witness this important moment.

Mother Parvati said to her companions, "Today, through my penance and love, I will give birth to a son who will be a reflection of my heart." Maternal affection welled up in her eyes. "This son will not only be my protector, but he will also ensure that no one enters my chamber without my permission." She made a firm resolution in her heart.

The War Between Ganesh and Shiva

One day, Lord Shiva returned from his meditation and began to enter Mother Parvati's chamber. The boy Ganesh, standing at the door, stopped him. Shiva asked in surprise, "Who is this boy, and how dare he stop me?" Ganesh firmly replied, "I am the son of Mother Parvati, and her command is that no one should enter without her permission." Lord Shiva became angry. He tried to reason with Ganesh, but Ganesh remained firm. Finally, in anger, a fierce battle broke out between Lord Shiva and Ganesh. The gods also gathered in the sky to watch this amazing sight.

Ganesh, born from the power of Mother Parvati, was therefore extremely powerful. He defeated the ganas of Lord Shiva. There was chaos among the gods, and the earth began to tremble. Lord Shiva struck Ganesh with his trident, severing his head from his body. When Mother Parvati received this news, her anger reached its peak.

Cutting Off Ganesh's Head

Mother Parvati's anger was so terrible that the entire creation cried out in distress. She warned Lord Shiva that if Ganesh was not brought back to life, she would destroy the entire creation. Lord Shiva ordered the gods to find a new head for Ganesh. He said, "Bring the head of any creature that is sleeping with its head facing north." The gods found an elephant in this state. The elephant's head was placed on Ganesh's torso, and Lord Shiva revived Ganesh with his powers. In this way, Ganesh became the elephant-faced one, and Mother Parvati's anger subsided.

Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we saw the birth of Ganesh and his war with Shiva. We also learned how Ganesh, born from the love and penance of Mother Parvati, introduced the gods to his power, and finally, he received the elephant face – this teaches us how important it is to respect maternal power.
