The Glory of Indraprastha and the Downfall of Yudhishthira

The Pandavas transformed Khandavaprastha into Indraprastha through their valor and hard work. An era of prosperity and well-being prevailed all around, and the subjects lived their lives with love and peace. The fame of Indraprastha spread far and wide, as if heaven itself had descended upon earth.

Preparation for the Rajasuya Yajna

Indraprastha, with its magnificent splendor, was captivating even the gods. Yudhishthira, the Dharmaraja, was dedicated to his subjects, and his heart was filled with unwavering faith in righteousness and justice. Together with his brothers, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, he had made Indraprastha such a place where there was no room for sorrow or poverty. Now, a desire arose in Yudhishthira's heart to perform the Rajasuya Yajna, which could establish him as a Chakravarti Samrat (Emperor of Emperors). This yajna would not only be a display of his power but also a significant occasion for the establishment of Dharma.

Yudhishthira consulted his guru, Sage Dhaumya, saying, "Gurudev, I have a desire to perform the Rajasuya Yajna. Is this the right time? Should I do it?" Sage Dhaumya replied, "O Dharmaraja! Your thought is excellent. The Rajasuya Yajna will not only increase your fame but also elevate Dharma. This yajna will be auspicious and fruitful for you."

Shakuni's Cunning Invitation

Preparations for the Rajasuya Yajna began with great fanfare. Invitations were sent to kings, emperors, and scholars from far and wide. Everyone was eager to participate in the yajna, except for Duryodhana. Duryodhana, along with his maternal uncle Shakuni, was burning with envy seeing the prosperity of Indraprastha. Shakuni incited Duryodhana, saying, "Duryodhana, these Pandavas are becoming stronger day by day. If you do nothing, they will seize the entire kingdom. You must defeat Yudhishthira in a game of dice. I know he is weak in this game, and I can defeat him easily."

Caught in Shakuni's web of conspiracy, Duryodhana sought permission from Dhritarashtra to invite Yudhishthira to Hastinapur for a game of dice. Dhritarashtra, blinded by paternal affection, reluctantly agreed. He asked Vidura to send the invitation to Yudhishthira. Vidura, a knower of Dharma, knew that disaster was imminent in this game. He feared that this invitation could lead to the destruction of the Pandavas, but it was his duty to obey the king's command.

The Downfall of Yudhishthira

Yudhishthira could not refuse the invitation sent by Vidura. As a Kshatriya, refusing a challenge was against his Dharma. He arrived in Hastinapur with his brothers and Draupadi. The game of dice began. Shakuni, with his tricks, kept defeating Yudhishthira. Yudhishthira first staked his wealth, then his kingdom, his army, and finally, even his brothers, and lost them all. Shakuni's cunning and Yudhishthira's infatuation with gambling pushed him completely towards downfall.

Krishna, the all-knowing, was observing this event from afar. He knew that this was a conflict between righteousness and unrighteousness. Through Narada Muni, he prayed to the gods for the protection of Dharma and mentally inspired Yudhishthira to remain patient. Krishna knew that he would have to intervene at the right time, but for now, he had to let Yudhishthira bear the consequences of his actions, so that the world could understand the glory of Dharma.

Draupadi as Stake and the Consequence

Yudhishthira had lost his senses. He was so blinded by the intoxication of gambling that he had no awareness of Dharma and Adharma. Shakuni provoked him, saying, "Yudhishthira, what do you have left now? Why don't you stake your wife, Draupadi? If you win, you can get everything back." Yudhishthira, having lost his intellect, also staked Draupadi and lost. With this loss, the honor, dignity, and future of the Pandavas were all at stake.
