Chapter 1 of Devi Bhagwat Purana — The Origin Story of Durga. It describes the story of Goddess Durga's origin, the prayers of the gods to her, and the atrocities of Mahishasura.

The Origin Story of Durga

In the previous chapter, we heard the description of the fierce battle fought between the gods and the demons. Lord Indra, having lost his strength, was crying out in distress. Now, we enter the narrative of the emergence of that unique power, which manifested to save the gods and re-establish righteousness.

The Gods' Invocation for Power

There was an atmosphere of fear in the heavens. Troubled by the atrocities of Mahishasura, the gods gathered before Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh for help. Despair was on their faces and fear in their hearts. They knew that Mahishasura could not be defeated by ordinary power. His strength was unprecedented and could only be stopped by a divine power. All the gods were ready to collectively invoke that supreme power, a power that could bring balance to the three worlds.

Lord Brahma said in a calm voice, "O gods, there is only one way now. We must worship the Adi Shakti. She alone can deliver us from this crisis." Lord Vishnu supported him, saying, "Brahma Ji is telling the truth. We must invoke the Goddess with all our strength and devotion." Lord Shiva spoke in a grave tone, "Then why delay? Come, let us all meditate together on that supreme light, who is the mother of the entire universe."

The Divine Manifestation of Durga

The gods of the three worlds collectively meditated on the Adi Shakti. From their combined radiance, a wondrous light emerged. From that light, a divine woman manifested, who was as radiant as a thousand suns. She had ten arms, adorned with various types of weapons. Her face was serene and compassionate, but the flames of intense anger against injustice blazed in her eyes. She was none other than Durga, the slayer of Mahishasura, who had descended to protect righteousness.

As Goddess Durga appeared, a wave of joy spread throughout the universe. The faces of the gods lit up. They were convinced that their fear would now be dispelled and righteousness would be re-established. Goddess Durga, bestowing her blessings, said, "O gods, do not be afraid. I have come here to protect all of you. I will slay Mahishasura and establish Dharma. Be at ease." The words of the Goddess instilled courage in the hearts of the gods.

Description of Mahishasura's Atrocities

There were no bounds to Mahishasura's atrocities. He had seized dominion over the heavens and expelled the gods from their abode. He had caused havoc on Earth. Sages were prevented from performing sacrifices, and innocent people were tormented. Dharma was being destroyed, and unrighteousness prevailed. Mahishasura was blinded by the arrogance of his immense power. He had no inkling that his end was near.

The piteous cries of Mother Earth, tormented by Mahishasura's atrocities, reached the ears of the gods. Hearing this, Goddess Durga's anger intensified further. She looked towards her mount, the lion, who was ready to obey her command. Goddess Durga knew that a battle with Mahishasura was now inevitable, and she would have to display her power to protect Dharma. In the very next moment, she began preparations for war.

Summary of Chapter 1: Tormented by the atrocities of Mahishasura, the gods invoked the Adi Shakti. Hearing their prayers, the divine form of Goddess Durga manifested, who gave assurance to the gods and vowed to slay Mahishasura. This chapter teaches us that when Dharma is in danger, divine power inevitably manifests and protects its devotees.
