Dattatreya Katha – Chapter 5: Kartavirya Arjuna's Boon

The Boon of Kartavirya Arjuna
After revealing the profound secrets of the Avadhuta Gita, Lord Dattatreya continued on his journey. Meanwhile, King Kartavirya Arjuna of Mahishmati was eager for the expansion of his kingdom and the welfare of his subjects. He knew that without divine power, this task was impossible. Therefore, he decided to undertake severe penance to please Lord Dattatreya and obtain a boon from him.
The Beginning of Penance
Kartavirya Arjuna settled himself on the banks of the Narmada River in a serene forest. His body was covered in dust and dirt, but his mind was focused on one goal. The scorching heat of the sun and the downpour of rain could not break his penance. He continued to chant only the name of Dattatreya, dedicating his mind and body entirely to him. There was unwavering faith in his eyes and a strong desire to meet him in his heart. He knew that his penance would be successful, and Dattatreya would surely bestow his grace upon him.
Kartavirya Arjuna spoke to himself, "O Lord Dattatreya, I am in your refuge. Grant me strength so that I can protect my subjects and make my kingdom prosperous. Accept my penance and give me your blessings." He had renounced all his worldly pleasures; his sole aim was to have a vision of Lord Dattatreya.
Dattatreya's Boon
Pleased by the intense penance of Kartavirya Arjuna, Lord Dattatreya appeared before him. His radiance was like the sun, and his smile held an ocean of compassion. Kartavirya Arjuna immediately prostrated at his feet and expressed the desire of his heart. Dattatreya blessed him and granted him the boon of a thousand arms, due to which he became known as 'Sahasrarjuna'. Along with this, he also granted the boon that no enemy would be able to kill him, and with his thousand arms, he would rule the entire earth righteously.
Dattatreya, while instructing Kartavirya Arjuna, said, "O King, this power is being given to you to protect the people and establish righteousness. Never misuse it, otherwise, it can become the cause of your destruction. Stay away from ego and tyranny, and always walk on the path of truth." He explained to his disciple that the proper use of power is what makes a person great.
Misuse of Power and Future Consequences
After receiving the boon, Kartavirya Arjuna became a powerful king. Initially, he used his power for the welfare of his subjects, but gradually ego entered his mind. He began to misuse his power, tormenting innocent people and violating the sanctity of dharma. His cruelty grew, and the earth trembled with his tyranny. The gods and sages prayed to Lord Vishnu to put an end to this tyranny. This very tyranny would become the reason for the birth of Parashurama and his guidance.
Summary of Chapter 5: This chapter describes the penance of Kartavirya Arjuna and the boon of a thousand arms granted to him by Dattatreya. However, it also shows how important it is to exercise responsibility with power, and how its misuse can be destructive, which further leads to the avatar of Parashurama.
