Childhood and Education

Born from the womb of Mother Anasuya, Dattatreya was an incarnation of the Trimurti. In the previous chapter, we heard the wondrous tale of his birth. Now, we will see what his childhood was like and how he received his education. As a divine child, his influence permeated everywhere.

Wondrous Childhood Leelas

Dattatreya's childhood was entirely different from that of ordinary children. His eyes were filled with a radiance, as if they contained the knowledge of a seer of past, present, and future. He was of a calm disposition, yet his smile held such enchantment that everyone was drawn to him. Mother Anasuya would hold him in her lap and gaze at him with immense love, while Sage Atri would be lost in contemplating his future. His divine aura also influenced the surrounding environment. Flowers and fruits in the ashram always bloomed more abundantly, and birds and animals roamed fearlessly.

Once, Mother Anasuya asked Dattatreya, "Child, what do you desire?" Smiling, the child Dattatreya said, "Mother, I only desire your love. And may all beings in this world be well, that is my wish." Hearing his words, Mother Anasuya's heart was filled with love. Sage Atri would also be astonished by the child's intelligence and compassion.

Initial Education and Initiation

Dattatreya's education began under the guidance of Sage Atri. He deeply studied the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and philosophy. His intellect was so sharp that he understood everything at once. Sage Atri also taught him yoga and meditation, in which Dattatreya soon became proficient. He was not only a scholar of scriptures but had also learned to embody his knowledge in his life.

Sage Atri, while initiating Dattatreya, said, "Son, you are a knower of all three worlds. Your birth is for the establishment of Dharma and the welfare of humanity. Your knowledge and penance will give a new direction to the world. You must respect your gurus and always remain in the pursuit of knowledge." Dattatreya accepted his guru's words with reverence and made them the guiding principle of his life. With his initiation, joy spread across all three worlds. The gods showered flowers, and the Gandharvas sang melodious music.

Thirst for Knowledge and Towards the Next Stage

Even after his education was complete, Dattatreya's thirst for knowledge was not quenched. He began to travel to various places in the world to gain direct knowledge from nature and humans. He saw a part of the Supreme Being in every creature and learned something from them. The purpose of his journey was to uncover the profound mysteries of life and to show humanity the right path. Now, he was eager to gain knowledge from the twenty-four gurus, from whom he would learn the true meaning of life.
