Chapter 1 of Dattatreya Katha — Birth and Parents. This chapter describes the birth of Dattatreya and the sanctity of his parents, Sage Atri and Mother Anasuya.

Birth and Parents

The chastity of Sati Anusuya and her immense devotion were renowned throughout the three worlds. The gods made many attempts to test her devotion, but all failed. Now, a new divine play was about to begin, the story of an avatar who would be a wonderful confluence of knowledge, devotion, and detachment.

Anusuya's Divine Penance

Anusuya, the wife of Rishi Atri, was performing severe penance in the Dandakaranya forest. A divine light was spreading all around from her penance, as if the sun itself was ashamed. Her eyes held an ocean of compassion, and her heart harbored the desire for the welfare of the three worlds. Even birds were afraid to disturb her penance, and wild animals would come and sit peacefully at her feet. Anusuya had dedicated her mind, speech, and actions to the feet of the Supreme Being. Her penance was not merely physical but a wonderful example of inner purity and complete surrender.

"O Lord," Anusuya would pray, "grant me the strength to serve the distressed and the suffering. Grant me the knowledge to dispel the darkness of ignorance. Grant me the devotion to remain forever absorbed at Your feet. My penance is solely to receive Your grace." Tears flowed from her eyes, reflecting the depth of her devotion. She had faith that her penance would surely bear fruit.

The Test of the Trimurti

Hearing of Anusuya's penance, the Trimurti – Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh – became concerned. They felt that Anusuya, through her penance, could shake their thrones. They then decided to test Anusuya themselves, but in a deceptive manner. The three of them arrived in the Dandakaranya forest disguised as ascetics and began begging for food at the door of Rishi Atri's ashram. When Anusuya brought them food, they said, "O Goddess, we will eat only if you serve us naked."

Anusuya was momentarily disturbed upon hearing this, but she remembered her vow of chastity and resolved not to deviate from her dharma. She mentally meditated on her husband, Rishi Atri, and sprinkled water on the Trimurti. As soon as the water was sprinkled, the three ascetics transformed into six-month-old infants. Anusuya placed them in a cradle and began to nurture them with maternal affection. Thus, Anusuya succeeded in her test, and the glory of her chastity increased even further. The Trimurti appeared and asked Anusuya to ask for a boon.

The Birth of Dattatreya

Anusuya prayed to the Trimurti that they should be born as her sons. The Trimurti accepted her prayer and said that they would be her sons in their partial forms. When the appropriate time came, Anusuya gave birth to a divine infant with three faces and six hands. That infant was an avatar of the Trimurti, and he was named Dattatreya. Joy spread throughout the three worlds with the birth of Dattatreya. The gods began showering flowers, and the Gandharvas began singing.

Anusuya and Atri Muni were blessed by the birth of Dattatreya. They accepted Dattatreya as their son and raised him. Dattatreya was exceptionally talented from childhood. He effortlessly acquired knowledge of the Vedas and scriptures. His speech was like nectar, and his heart was filled with compassion. Dattatreya was extremely devoted to his parents and always respected them. Dattatreya's influence began to spread everywhere, and people started considering him their guru. His devotees began to experience happiness and peace.

Childhood Leelas

Dattatreya's childhood was filled with wonderful leelas of knowledge and devotion. His parents imparted to him the knowledge of the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures. Dattatreya learned many yogic practices in his childhood and astonished everyone with his sadhana. Now, in the next chapter, we will see how Dattatreya received his education, whom he took as his gurus, and how he illuminated the world with his knowledge. The beginning of his education leads him towards detachment.

Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we heard the story of Anusuya's divine penance, her test by the Trimurti, and the birth of Dattatreya. From this story, we learn the importance of the dharma of chastity, the power of penance, and complete surrender to God. Dattatreya's birth from the partial forms of the Trimurti is a symbol of knowledge, devotion, and detachment.
