The Challenge of Shumbh-Nishumbh

The echoes of the victory celebration of Goddess Chamunda had barely subsided when chaos erupted in the realms of the demons. The news of the destruction of Chand and Mund spread like wildfire, igniting the flames of anger in the hearts of Shumbh and Nishumbh. The pride of their invincible army had been humbled, and they were in no mood to tolerate such an insult.

The Fury of the Asuras

Silence had descended upon Shumbh's court, broken only by the fierce roar of his anger. His face had turned red, and his veins bulged with the clenching of his fists. Nishumbh, usually of a calm disposition, also had eyes burning like embers. The death of Chand and Mund had deeply wounded their prestige, and they were eager to teach a lesson to the Goddess who had shattered their arrogance. The thought of the destruction of their demons was churning their minds, and they were burning with the fire of revenge. They wanted to wash away this stain on their powerful empire, no matter the cost.

Shumbh roared, "Who is this Goddess who has slain so many of our mighty warriors? Is her power greater than ours? Nishumbh, we must immediately find that Goddess and teach her a lesson. This is an insult to our lineage, which we can never tolerate." Nishumbh nodded in agreement and said, "Brother, your command is my duty. I will immediately prepare my army. We will bring that Goddess here and shatter her arrogance."

Declaration of War

Shumbh and Nishumbh immediately declared war. Their vast army, comprising countless demons and Asuras, prepared for battle. Armed with terrible weapons, they marched towards the abode of the Goddess. The earth trembled with the rumble of their chariots and the clamor of the army. A cloud of dust rose into the sky, dimming even the sunlight. The gods themselves were struck with fear witnessing the cruelty and destructive power of the demons.

As the demon army began to advance towards the Himalayas, Goddess Chamunda, with her divine power, came to know of everything. She smiled and said, "The arrogance of the Asuras is leading them towards destruction. My purpose is to protect Dharma and destroy the wicked. In this war, the victory of truth is certain. My devotees should have no fear, for I am always ready to protect them."

The Destruction of the Demons

Goddess Chamunda began to slay the demons, displaying her divine power. The Asuras fled in terror at her mere roar. The Goddess's weapons instantly sent countless demons to their death. The battlefield was strewn with corpses, and rivers of blood began to flow. Shumbh and Nishumbh were blinded by rage, but they could not withstand the Goddess's power. They trembled at the fierce form of Goddess Chamunda, yet pride did not let them retreat. Their strength waned, and they knew their end was near. Finally, the Goddess slew Shumbh and Nishumbh with her divine weapons.
