Chapter 2 of Brihaspati Guru Katha — Brihaspati, the Guru of the Gods. Brihaspati becomes the guru of the gods and provides them with knowledge and guidance.

Guru Brihaspati, the Preceptor of the Gods

In the previous chapter, we learned about the birth of Brihaspati and his extraordinary knowledge. Brihaspati, the radiant son of Sage Angira, descended to illuminate the three worlds with the light of his wisdom. Now, we will see how his knowledge and intelligence were recognized by the gods, and how they appointed him as their guru. This was a significant moment for the gods, as they now had a worthy guide to seek guidance and protection from the demons.

Appointment as Guru by Indra

Heaven was filled with joy and prosperity, but the fear of demonic invasions always lingered in the minds of the gods. Indra, the king of the gods, was worried. He needed a scholar and wise person who could show the gods the right path and protect them from the demons' conspiracies. Indra gathered all the gods. His court was adorned with golden thrones and fragrant flowers. Hope and anticipation were visible on the faces of the gods.

Indra said in a solemn voice, "O gods, we all know that the power of the demons is increasing. We need a guru who can guide us correctly and protect us. I believe that Brihaspati, the son of Sage Angira, is the most qualified for this position. His knowledge is boundless, and his intellect is unparalleled." All the gods unanimously agreed. Brihaspati was respectfully summoned to the court.

When Brihaspati arrived at the court, everyone was astonished by his radiance. Indra bowed to him and said, "O Guru Brihaspati, we appoint you as the guru of the gods. Please guide us and protect us from the demons. Only with your knowledge and blessings can we protect heaven." Brihaspati humbly accepted Indra's proposal. "O King of Gods, I pledge to serve the gods to the best of my ability. I will protect heaven from the atrocities of the demons by following the path of knowledge and righteousness."

Measures for Protection from Demons

As soon as Guru Brihaspati took charge as the guru of the gods, he took many measures for protection from the demons. He imparted the knowledge of powerful mantras to the gods, enabling them to increase their strength. Brihaspati also taught them various war strategies, so they could effectively confront the demons. He explained the importance of yajnas and rituals, so they could please the gods and receive their blessings.

One day, Indra asked Brihaspati, "O Guru, the power of the demons has greatly increased. How will we achieve victory over them?" Brihaspati replied, "O King of Gods, knowledge and righteousness are more important than power. We must walk the path of dharma and keep our actions pure. Also, we must be prepared to understand and counter the demons' schemes." Brihaspati imparted the knowledge of the 'Narayana Kavach' to Indra, which could protect Indra and other gods from the deadly weapons of the demons. He inspired the gods to remain united and help each other.

Brihaspati's knowledge and guidance proved to be an invaluable treasure for the gods. Through his efforts, the gods' strength increased, and they were able to successfully confront the demons. An atmosphere of peace and prosperity was re-established in heaven, and all the gods were grateful to Guru Brihaspati.

Knowledge of Yajnas and Rituals

Guru Brihaspati imparted deep knowledge of various yajnas and rituals to the gods. He told them how to please the gods and receive their blessings by following the correct mantras and procedures. He explained the special significance of the 'Brihaspati Yajna', which bestows prosperity, knowledge, and success. He told the gods that through yajnas, they could not only enhance their personal power but also spread positive energy throughout the universe.

The lives of the gods were enriched by Guru Brihaspati's knowledge. They now understood the importance of dharma and karma, and they had learned to use their power for justice and goodness. However, fate had something else in store. The period of peace and prosperity for the gods did not last long. The attraction of Chandra (Moon) towards Brihaspati's wife, Tara, and the resulting conflict, was about to bring a new test. The future of the gods was once again to be shrouded in clouds of uncertainty. In the next chapter, we will see what changes Tara's temptation and conflict bring into the lives of the gods.

Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw how Indra appointed Brihaspati as the guru of the gods. Brihaspati suggested measures to protect the gods from demons and imparted knowledge of various yajnas and rituals. The spiritual message of this chapter is that any difficulty can be faced by following the path of knowledge and righteousness.
