Chapter 3 of the Bhagavad Gita — Karma Yoga: The Path of Action. Krishna emphasizes the importance of performing one's duty without expecting the fruits of labor, thus Karma Yoga requires Nishkama Karma.

Karma Yoga: The Path of Action

Arjun's mind was trying to assimilate the profound knowledge of Sankhya Yoga. In the previous chapter, Krishna had shed light on the immortality of the soul and the path to liberation from worldly attachments. However, a question still lingered deeply in Arjun's mind: If it is possible to attain knowledge by renouncing action, then what is the significance of action?

Arjun's Question: Action or Knowledge?

Silence had fallen upon the battlefield, with only the horses of the warriors moving slowly here and there. Arjun's Gandiva trembled in his hands, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon, as if searching for an answer. His heart was filled with dilemmas; he was caught between the inevitability of war and the pursuit of knowledge. The questions arising in his mind were gnawing at him from within.

Arjun looked towards Krishna and humbly asked, "O Keshav, if according to you, intellect is superior to action, then why do you engage me in this terrible action? Why do you give me such advice that confuses my intellect? Please tell me a path that is certainly beneficial."

Lord Krishna's Counsel: Act with Devotion

Krishna understood Arjun's distress and smiled gently. He said, "Arjun, two types of devotion are described in this world: the yoga of knowledge for the Sankhyayogis and Karma Yoga for the yogis. One cannot attain Nishkarmya (liberation from actions) merely by renouncing actions. To be free from the bondage of action, it is not renunciation of action, but devotion in action that is necessary. Continue to perform your prescribed duties without attachment to the fruits, for action is superior to inaction. Without action, even the sustenance of the body is not possible."

As soon as Shri Krishna spoke these words, a new hope dawned in Arjun's mind. He realized that the essence of life is not to run away from action, but to perform it with complete devotion and dedication. There was a wonderful power in Shri Krishna's voice that dispelled Arjun's dilemma and inspired him to remain steadfast on the path of action. Krishna further said, "He who controls his senses and performs actions through the organs of action without attachment, he is superior. Perform your destined duty with selfless intent, for selfless action liberates from bondage."

The Importance of Renunciation and Nishkama Karma Yoga

Krishna explained to Arjun that one should perform actions for sacrifice (Yajna). Yajna means action performed selflessly, dedicated to the welfare of the world. He said, "This world is bound by the bondage of action, Arjun. Therefore, act as a duty without attachment. In the beginning of creation, Lord Brahma created beings along with sacrifice and said that this sacrifice will fulfill your desires. By sacrifice, satisfy the gods, and the gods will satisfy you. Thus, by satisfying each other, you will attain the supreme welfare."

Arjun listened attentively, and the importance of Karma Yoga began to become clear in his mind. He understood that the path to liberation is not renunciation of action, but renunciation of attachment to its fruits. Krishna's teachings inspired Arjun to walk the path of duty, making him realize that Nishkama Karma Yoga is the true yoga. Now Arjun's mind was ready for battle, for he knew it was his duty, and he had to perform it with complete devotion without worrying about the results. By the end of this chapter, Arjun had understood the importance of Karma Yoga, but he still wished to understand the various aspects of knowledge more deeply, for which he would seek guidance from Shri Krishna in the next chapter.

Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, Lord Krishna preached Karma Yoga to Arjun. He explained that liberation can be attained not by renouncing action, but by performing action with selfless intent. Renunciation of attachment to the fruits, not renunciation of action, is true renunciation.
