Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita — Sankhya Yoga: True Knowledge. Krishna explains the nature of the eternal soul, the consequences of actions, and the path of knowledge, educating Arjuna about righteousness.

Sankhya Yoga: True Knowledge

Distressed by Arjuna's despondency, Lord Krishna began to impart profound knowledge to him. In the previous chapter, Arjuna had renounced his weapons upon seeing his relatives on the battlefield. Now, Krishna makes him realize the true nature of the world and the importance of duty.

Immortality of the Soul

Arjuna was immersed in sorrow, as if lost in an ocean. His eyes were red, and his body was trembling. He was tormented by the thought of the destruction of his family members. Krishna looked at him calmly, with infinite compassion in His eyes. He began to speak in His sweet voice, His words bringing peace to Arjuna's heart.

Shri Krishna said, "Arjuna, you are grieving like an ignorant person. The wise do not grieve for the living or the dead. The soul is immortal, indestructible. It is never born, nor does it ever die. The body is merely a garment that the soul wears and then casts off."

Arjuna asked, "But Lord, how can I understand this? How can I kill my gurus, my grandfathers, my brothers? Will this not be a sin?"

Krishna replied, "Arjuna, it is true that war is a terrible act, but it is necessary for the protection of Dharma. Your duty is to fight for justice and to fulfill your duty. No one can kill the soul; it is eternal and indestructible. Your actions will only affect the body, not the soul. If you are killed in this war, you will attain heaven, and if you win, you will enjoy the pleasures of the earth. Therefore, do not grieve, Arjuna, do your duty."

Importance of Karma Yoga

Arjuna's dilemma still remained, but Krishna's words had ignited a ray of hope in his mind. He took a deep breath and listened attentively to Krishna. Krishna knew that only knowledge could dispel Arjuna's doubts. He clarified the importance of Karma Yoga.

Krishna continued, "Arjuna, perform your duty, but do not be attached to the fruits of your actions. You have a right only to perform your duty, not to the fruits thereof. The fruits are subject to nature. Perform your duty without attachment; this is Karma Yoga. By performing one's duty without attachment and desire, one becomes free from bondage. One who acts with a desire for the fruits of action becomes bound. One who acts selflessly becomes liberated." Deep truth was hidden in Krishna's words, touching Arjuna's heart.

Arjuna then asked, "So, should I continue to act without worrying about the fruits?"

"Yes, Arjuna," Krishna said, "Perform your duty without worrying about success or failure. Offer your actions to God. This will bring you peace and you will cross the ocean of existence. One who renounces the desire for the fruits of action and performs only his duty attains the ultimate goal of life."

The Need for Self-Knowledge

Krishna explained to Arjuna the necessity of self-knowledge, stating that true knowledge alone can free a person from delusion. When a person realizes his true nature, he is no longer afraid of the sorrows of the world. As Krishna spoke, Arjuna's mind began to calm down. He felt as if he was slowly emerging from the ocean of ignorance.

Shri Krishna further said, "Arjuna, without self-knowledge, you will remain entangled in the illusions of the world. You must understand that you are not the body; you are the soul. This world is transient, and only the soul is eternal. To attain self-knowledge, you must control your senses, calm your mind, and develop your intellect." There was confidence in Krishna's voice, and it had the power to inspire Arjuna. Arjuna felt as if a new path was opening before him.

Krishna concluded by saying, "Arjuna, rise and fulfill your duty. Do not fear, for Dharma is with you. One who walks the path of Dharma is never defeated. You are a warrior, and war is your Dharma. Renounce sorrow and fight!"

Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, Lord Krishna told Arjuna about the immortality of the soul, the importance of Karma Yoga, and the need for self-knowledge. He inspired Arjuna to perform his duty without worrying about the fruits and to renounce fear and delusion. This chapter further paves the way for Karma Yoga, where the right way of performing actions will be explained in detail.
