Chapter 1 of Annapurna Mata Katha — Shiva's Doubt and Parvati. Lord Shiva calls the world an illusion, which angers Parvati, and she decides to prove the importance of food.

Shiva's Doubt and Parvati

As usual, peace prevailed on Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva was immersed in meditation, and Mother Parvati was attentive to his service. The atmosphere was filled with devotion and joy, as if nature itself was a witness to their love. However, destiny had something else in store.

Food is Maya!

Shiva awoke from his meditation. His matted locks shone like the rays of the sun. He opened his eyes and looked at Parvati. There was a strange indifference on his face, which Parvati had never known. For a moment, an unusual silence fell upon the atmosphere. Even the chirping of birds ceased, as if they too were gripped by a premonition of an impending event.

Shiva said softly, "Parvati, this world is Maya. Food, water, everything is an illusion. The soul alone is truth, and merging into it is the ultimate goal." His voice held unwavering conviction, yet Parvati was surprised to hear this. She knew Shiva was knowledgeable, but calling food Maya did not sit well with her heart.

Parvati asked humbly, "Lord, how can you call food Maya? It is the basis of life. Not just humans, but animals and birds also survive on food. It is a boon granted by Brahma."

"Parvati," Shiva replied, "it is true that food is the basis of life, but it only nourishes the physical body. The soul finds satisfaction only through knowledge and detachment. This bondage of food ultimately ties humans to attachment, from which they stray from the ultimate truth."

Parvati's Anger

Shiva's words struck Parvati's heart like arrows. She became angry. Her eyes turned red, and her face began to glow with radiance. The very food that she valued so much had been called Maya by her Lord. This was unbearable for her. She thought, "If food is Maya, then how will the world survive? If food has no importance, then on what basis does this creation rest?"

Filled with anger, Parvati said, "O Shiva! If food is Maya, then I will prove the power of this food. I will make the world understand the importance of food. I will take the form of Annapurna and provide food to the world. Then you will understand that food is not Maya, but the essence of life."

Saying this, Parvati disappeared. Silence descended upon Mount Kailash. Shiva realized his mistake. He had angered Parvati, and now he would have to pay a heavy price for it. But he knew that whatever Parvati did would be for the welfare of the world.

Parvati assumed the form of Annapurna. Her form was extremely radiant and serene. In one hand, she held a golden pot of food, and in the other, a gaze filled with compassion. She resolved to provide food to every living being in the world and establish the importance of food. By her grace, the earth became lush and green, and the granaries were filled.

From Kailash Towards Kashi

After Parvati's disappearance, Shiva felt a sense of loneliness. He missed Parvati, but he also knew that this was a time of testing for him. He knew that a great event was about to unfold in the world, which would affect everyone.

At that very moment, a famine broke out in the city of Kashi. There was widespread suffering due to the scarcity of food. People began to die of hunger, and chaos ensued. Shiva witnessed this scene and became concerned about Parvati. He knew that only Annapurna could save the people of Kashi now. Therefore, Shiva decided to proceed towards Kashi, so that he could meet Annapurna and help the people escape this crisis, but he did not know that another great test awaited him in Kashi.

Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, Lord Shiva describes food as Maya, which angers Mother Parvati, and she decides to take the form of Annapurna. Shiva realizes his mistake and becomes worried upon witnessing the famine in Kashi. The next chapter will focus on the crisis of famine in Kashi. The spiritual essence is that food is the basis of life and should not be disrespected.
